ARCHERY

18 Reasons It Might Secretly Be Your Sport

Escape the ordinary at Sports De Combats, Montreal

MORE THAN JUST ARROWS

Archery is not just about arrows and targets. It is a game of balance in every direction: body, mind, and emotions.

To hit the centre, you have to tether in the sweet spot between opposites: focus and relaxation, tension and release, discipline and play. Like a glass filled right to the brim, there cannot be a little too much or too little of anything.

That is why archery becomes more than an activity. It turns into a life-long journey of self‑improvement, reflection, and self‑discovery.

When you step onto the shooting line, your biggest rival and your most loyal teammate are the same person: you.

Whether you are a total beginner, a “not very sporty” human, a track & field star or a future high‑performance athlete, there is a place for you on our range.

Ready to try? Start with our Introduction to Archery class, then follow the archery journey we have built to take you as far as you want to go.

THE FOUR PILLARS

Strength, posture, rhythm and coordination.

Focus, patience, and emotional control.

HEART

Identity, confidence, belonging, and community.

LIFE

Heritage, technology, and lifestyle.

PILLAR ONE

BODY

1. A sport for all bodies

You do not have to be tall, jacked, or hyper‑flexible to be good at archery.

Kids, adults, seniors, plus‑size, post‑injury, neurodivergent, wheelchair users… you will find all of them on shooting lines around the world.

Because technique and repetition matter more than “perfect genetics”, archery is one of the rare sports where almost any body can learn to perform at a high level. We adapt draw weights, equipment, and drills so your body can grow stronger at its own pace.

At SDC, we coach complete beginners, para‑athletes and cancer survivors chasing national rankings. The common factor is not their body type. It is their curiosity and persistence.

2. Sneaky strenght

Drawing a bow looks gentle from the outside. Your back, shoulders, arms, and core know the truth.

To hold a bow steady on target, you need coordinated strength and stamina. At a typical archery tournament, male and female archers collectively pull an average weight of around 7.8 and 5.3 tons over the day. For comparison, the strongest Olympic weightlifters lift a total of about 1.5 tons. Not bad for a “quiet” sport.

At a typical archery tournament, that adds up to several thousand repetitions of the same basic movement. Your body gets a serious upper‑body workout while your mind stays locked on a very small target.

Over time, people notice better posture, more stable shoulders, stronger grip, and the ability to carry groceries or luggage with surprising ease.

You will not be doing burpees or sprints. You will be doing something more subtle: mindful repetition that slowly rewires your strength from the inside out.

Health & Rhythm

3. The “anti-desk” reset

If running and high‑impact sports are hard on your knees or back, archery gives you another option.

The movements are controlled and low impact. We spend time setting up a safe stance, aligning your spine, and opening your chest. For many people with “desk posture”, shooting becomes a weekly reset: shoulders open, back engaged, breathing deeper again.

You finish tired in a good way, not broken.

4. Choreography of control

Every arrow follows a rhythm:

stance → hook → draw → anchor → aim → release → follow‑through.

Repeat.
And repeat again.

Once you learn the basics, each shot feels almost like a short performance. Your body remembers the steps, your mind follows along, and the bow becomes part of that choreography.

It is sport, but there is something artistic about it too.

PILLAR TWO

MIND

5. True focus

You cannot aim at two things at once. Archery forces you to clear mental clutter.

6. Moving meditation

For those who can’t “just sit”, the repetition of shooting quiets the mind

7. Atomic habits

Small 1% improvements in form compound into massive results over time.

8. The reset

You cannot fix the last arrow. You learn to let go and focus only on the next shot.

PILLAR THREE

HEART

9. Internal competition

In most sports, you compete against other people. In archery, the real competition is mostly inside your own head.

Yes, there are tournaments and rankings. But every archer knows the deeper truth: the goal is to shoot a better version of your own shot, not someone else’s.

This is why archery can be so healing for people who hate comparison culture. You win by paying attention to your own process, not by obsessing over the person in the next lane.

10. Truly inclusive

We believe archery really is for everyone, and we see it every week at Sports de Combats.

  • One of our students, Alexa, is quadriplegic and training with the dream of the Paralympics in 2032.
  • Jean‑François, an active member of the Canadian Armed Forces with a prosthetic leg, shoots on the Canadian para national team and is aiming at the 2028 Games.
  • Christa picked up a bow after a year of cancer treatment. Two years later she is ranked among the best barebow women in Québec and Canada, part of our high‑performance squad.

Around the world, there are archers who shoot with their feet, with special tactile sights, or with limited vision. The adaptations change. The feeling of a good shot does not.

Archery gives people a way to build strength and confidence in bodies that have been judged, doubted, or underestimated. That matters more than any medal.

Archery is one of the few sports with Paralympic categories for wheelchair users and visually impaired athletes, with specialised equipment that lets them compete on the world stage.

A place to belong

11. Home for the “Not sporty”

Many archers were not the stars of their school gym class.

Some were the ones picked last. Some hated team sports, or loud locker rooms, or contact and collisions. Some just never saw themselves as “athletes”.

Archery offers a different atmosphere: structured, calm, focused. You can come alone, take your time, learn at your own pace. You do not have to shout. You do not have to perform for anyone. You just have to show up and put in the work.

For a lot of people, this is the first time sport feels like it was actually designed for them.

12. An international family

Our high‑performance team at SDC looks a bit like a small United Nations on the shooting line.

Among our archers you will find people who were born in Vietnam, Belgium and Ukraine, Russia, Iran, China, the USA, France, Tahiti, Mexico, Colombia, and here in Québec. Many of us came to Canada from another country, starting fresh in a new language and culture.

On the range, accents, passports, and stories all mix. We share equipment tips, playlists, snacks, and nerves before big events. The goal is the same for everyone: do our best on that target.

Whether you were born in Montréal or arrived last year, there is space for your story on this line.

13. Real confidence

Archery builds confidence in a very honest way.

You see your arrows land closer to the center. You feel your technique become more stable. You watch your scores slowly climb, and you know exactly why: you showed up, you trained, you listened, you tried again after bad days.

There is just you, your bow, and the target. The confidence that grows out of that is quiet, grounded, and hard to shake.

PILLAR FOUR

LIFE

14. Living heritage

Archery is one of the oldest human skills.

Hunters, warriors, messengers, guardians of cities… for thousands of years, people survived and wrote history with bows in their hands. Today, modern Olympic and Paralympic archers stand in the same basic posture, drawing the same kind of line from body to target.

When you step onto the shooting line, you are joining that river of stories.
The targets look modern. The feeling of nocking an arrow and drawing the string is something humans have known for centuries.

15. High tech

At its heart, archery is simple: bow, string, arrow. The tools, however, have come a long way.

On our range you will see carbon limbs, stabilisation systems, engineered arrows, precise sighting, and the use of slow‑motion video and modern biomechanics to refine technique. Traditional barebows and longbows stand next to Olympic recurves and compound bows with cams and peep sights.

It is an elegant mix of heritage and science: centuries of technique meeting physics, materials engineering, and sports research.

Modern arrows can leave the bow at well over 200 km/h, yet the difference between a 10 and a 7 on the target often comes down to a movement of just a few millimetres in your fingers or your back.

16. Fits your life

You do not need a full team or perfect weather to shoot.

Our premium indoor range in Mile End is open year‑round, seven days a week. Snowstorm, heatwave, or freezing rain, your training can keep going in a comfortable, controlled environment.

Sessions are usually 60 to 90 minutes, easy to fit around work, studies, and family life. You can pause during busy seasons and come back without starting from zero.

Fun & Progression

17. Screen-free gaming

If you love games, numbers, and challenges, archery feels very familiar.

There are scores to chase, distances to unlock, personal records to beat. Each end of arrows gives you instant feedback. You can track your progress, plan goals, and celebrate small wins.

With experiences like ArcheryTime and other creative formats, you also get real bows and arrows interacting with reactive targets and playful game modes. It is the best of both worlds: game energy, real‑world movement.

18. A clear path

At Sports de Combats, we do not just offer a one‑off archery experience. We have built a full journey.

You can start with an Introduction to Archery class, move into Beginner‑Plus, explore different styles (traditional, Olympic recurve, compound), and then join club nights, leagues, or our high‑performance team if you catch the competitive bug.

You choose how far you want to go. Our job is to give you the coaching, the structure, and the community to get there.
